This workshop addresses the genre of popular choral music, one that is often misunderstood and undervalued. Mat takes a simple piece and discusses how choirs can perform it in an interesting and exciting way, by focusing on communication… with one another and the audience. Finding the right balance between technical accuracy and communicative expression is key to achieving a performance where we begin to ‘sing from our souls’. Audiences may forgive a wrong note, but never a lack of energy, passion and commitment!

Mathew Wright is founder and Artistic Director of the award-winning Barnsley Youth Choir, a community choir of 650 members based in an area of significant deprivation. He has worked in Education at Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and University levels as an Advanced Skills Teacher and Regional Director of Education for a large Education Trust. Mat is a composer and arranger and is in demand internationally as a clinician, workshop leader, conductor and adjudicator.
