NUKU Live is part of a creative and social impact storytelling movement that amplifies the voices of kickass Indigenous wāhine.

Qiane Matata-Sipu (Te Waiohua ki Te Ahiwaru me Te Ākitai, Waikato, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Pikiao, Cook Islands) has profiled some of the most respected and regarded indigenous women both in New Zealand and abroad, including academy-nominated film director/producer Chelsea Winstanley, fashion designer Kiri Nathan, dual rugby-rugby league player Honey Hireme-Smiler.

This February she begins the next 100 stories with NUKU //101 featuring an intimate interview with Kiritapu Allan. It’s the first time the podcast will be recorded live and you will get a unique and exclusive insight into the powerful storytelling series.

NUKU amplifies Indigenous female change-makers, system shakers and leaders through audio podcasts, photography, videography, books, art and live events.  The first 100 episodes of NUKU Podcast introduced us to award-winning musicians, to scientists, entrepreneurs, tribal leaders, artists, environmental champions, knowledge holders, mothers and more, the youngest was 14 and the eldest in her mid-70s. These NUKU wāhine seek to influence the world around them. They are wāhine Māori to Moriori, Pasifika, Melanesian, Wijadjuri, Himalayan and Mexican.

Those podcast interviews went on to become the stunning pukapuka that celebrates their stories was shortlisted for the 2022 Ockham NZ Book Award for Illustrated Nonfiction.

PodFest at Q is thrilled to host a special NUKU Live event, where Qiane will give us access to the raw and in-depth conversation in real time.

The word NUKU is derived from the atua Papatūānuku and represents the ultimate feminine essence. This women’s wānanga is about connection and collaboration, a celebration of culture, storytelling, identity and female power.

Powered by, made by and made for Indigenous wāhine, NUKU cultivates the opportunity to shape the world we want.

We invite you to look at the world through a different lens, a personal lens, a cultural lens. A lens made by and made for us. The women featured here dare to carve their own unique portrait.

These are stories about who we are, not who we’ve been told to be.
