Today, after signing the supply and installation contract in January this year and cheered on by industry and funders, Auckland Mayor, Wayne Brown, officially opened Q Theatre’s new dock lift.
The dock lift moves sets, technical equipment, and production materials from Q’s Greys Avenue loading dock directly to Rangatira, the main stage and substage. It is essential backstage infrastructure supporting a wide range of live performance at Q - one of Tāmaki Makuarau, Auckland's busiest performing arts venues.
Penelope Barr-Sellers, Chair, Q Theatre, said that today’s achievement will future-proof the theatre.
“It (the lift), is our most significant capital investment since opening 15 years ago. After months operating without it, we’re delighted to have this new technology up and running, and with a lifespan of over 30 years, we’re even more delighted the investment will pay off for years to come”, adds Penelope.
Following a competitive tender in July 2026, experts in venue engineering solutions, The P.A. People in collaboration with Gala Systems Canada, were commissioned for the design and build, achieving build milestones and delivery on budget and to time despite global supply disruptions.
A fundraising strategy was implemented to pay the dock lift replacement cost, with support coming from Lottery Grants Board, Auckland Council, Pub Charity Limited, and two major long-term donors of Q.
Sally-Anne Kerr, Chief Executive, Q Theatre said cost was a major consideration.
“When our old lift broke down, we knew we had to replace it, but we were concerned about our ability to do that because of the significant cost - $565,000.
“Replacement was only possible through the very generous support of funders and donors. We are extremely grateful,” adds Sally-Ann.
The lift uses four Gala Spiralift actuators and includes a new steel platform, timber floor, control system and comprehensive safety interlocks. The motorised platform is nearly six metres long, can align with different truck heights, carries up to 4,000 kilograms and operates at three metres per minute.
“The team are incredibly proud of the new lift, as well as somewhat relieved. For many months, sets and technical equipment had to be moved through Q Lounge, adding labour time and cost, disrupting public areas, and causing additional wear to the building. I am delighted that with partner support we’ve been able to substantially improve operational efficiency and safety as well as deliver a much-improved experience for our customers” adds Sally-Anne.
Each year, Q stages around 150 productions and more than 440 performances, while welcoming nearly 70,000 audience members.
